Our Trip to the Art Gallery

Hi, I’m Nicole and I am a member of our School Council Team.  I am here to welcome you to our school blog and keep you up to date with the latest news at Springhill Catholic Primary School!
Recently, year 6 went on an exhilarating school trip to our local Art Gallery in Southampton. Firstly, our literacy groups were guided towards the Art Department and sat down at a table. We were told that we were each going to make the mythical creature Medusa’s head out of fresh clay. To start us all off, the instructor, Jo, taught us to cut three quarters off of our large block of clay and place the smallest section into our plastic bags. Next, we shaped the block into an oval and then we flattened the bottom half down and turned it into shoulders. After that, we created eyes, a nose and a snarling mouth. Lastly, we made a set of hissing, textured snakes which we then placed onto our beast’s head. We used a special cloth to create the scales on our fabulous snakes. Eventually after a lot of hard work and effort, our masterpieces were complete!

To add to the amazing day, Jo gave us a tour of the unique art gallery upstairs. She showed us paintings of the Medusa story and spoke to us about how Medusa became cursed. She then said goodbye and that was the end of our astounding school trip!
Until our next blog written by me or the other year 6 students, Goodbye!
